Monday night in Clearwater, the first of three sold-out shows at Ruth Eckerd Hall, fans were treated to exactly that. There were no opening acts to sit through but rather a 35-minute video montage featuring vintage movie clips from classics such as “The Misfits,”‘The Grapes of Wrath,” and “A Street Car Named Desire.” Ironically enough, Turner Classic Movies is the tour sponsor. About 20-minutes into the movie clips, the natives started to get restless as a spattering of “We want John” could be heard through the crowd. As the lights dim, the sound of the band tuning up fills the venue. Suddenly, the crowd erupts into cheers as John Cougar Mellencamp walks onto the stage, guitar in hand. He’s dressed in all black, and he immediately launches into “John Cockers.”

The band behind him was tight and well-rehearsed, with each member adding their own flair to the songs. Mellencamp’s voice was as strong as ever, and he effortlessly hits every note. The energy in the venue is electric, with fans of all ages singing along to every word. As the concert continues, Mellencamp takes breaks between songs to chat with the crowd. He talks about his life and his experiences, and shares stories that give insight into the inspiration behind his music. These moments of intimacy are what make a John Cougar Mellencamp concert so special. He connects with the audience in a genuine and heartfelt way.

The concert features a mix of classic hits and newer songs, all of which showcase Mellencamp’s impressive range as a musician. He switches between acoustic and electric guitar, and even plays a few songs on the piano. The band also gets a chance to shine, with extended solos and impressive instrumental performances. This evenings set would cover 21 songs from across nine albums with five from his 1987 album, The Lonesome Jubilee.

Towards the midpoint of the concert, Mellencamp plays one of his most iconic songs, “Jack and Diane.” The crowd goes wild, singing along at the top of their lungs. Mellencamp grins, clearly enjoying the moment as much as the fans are.

As the concert comes to a close, Mellencamp takes a final bow and thanks the crowd for coming out. The fans cheer and scream, not wanting the night to end. But as the lights come back up and the band leaves the stage, it’s clear that this was a night to remember. A John Cougar Mellencamp concert is a celebration of great music, passionate performances, and the connections that can be made through art.
