The year is 1981. The location is Sacramento, California. The band that is formed is Tesla. The band split up in 1996 because members wanted to pursue solos project. They reformed the band in 2000. They have been going strong since then and will be bringing their hard rocking ways around the US at the end of August through September. In February, they take to the high seas and join the Monsters of Rock Cruise with the likes of Krokus, Extreme, Winger, and many many more!
Tesla rocked the house at the Fox Theater at Connecticut’s Foxwoods Casino recently. An enthusiastic crowd packed the sold out theater and the band delivered what their fans wanted. Some call Tesla a poor man’s Aerosmith because of many similarities. That is an unfair assessment as far as talent goes. Vocalist Jeff Keith has the stage presence and the pipes of Steven Tyler. Similarly, he’s backed by a lineup of dual guitars, bass, and drums which is every bit as good as their Beantown counterparts. Perhaps the only thing different is that Tesla’s songs don’t have the real catchy hooks that songs like “Walk This Way”, and “Sweet Emotion” have.
The show was visually stimulating as well as musically stimulating. Stage lighting was standard to hard rock lighting but three large display monitors graced the stage behind the band. Along with animated displays, they showed various themed displays. During “What You Give” they showed a variety of photos of the band and individual members throughout the band’s history. During “Edison’s Medicine” they paid homage to the band’s namesake, Nicola Tesla. Because the band was active, the visual display was added to. Jeff Keith strutted back and forth across the stage brandishing his long white scarf. Frank Hannon and Dave Rude traversed the stage, while they wielded their guitars. The rhythm section of Brian Wheat on bass and Troy Luccketta on drums was equally fun to watch as Wheat often climbed the drum riser steps to join Luccketta.
