Of all the bands who flourished during the incomprehensibly-fertile era of the 2000s, perhaps none had more of an enduring and varied output than of Montreal. The 2020s have been and continue to be a parade of huge 20th anniversaries for the Georgia band, and 2025 marks that milestone for The Sunlandic Twins. To commemorate, Kevin Barnes and company have plotted a tour in two parts – the first began on the vernal equinox in their home of Athens, GA, and will continue through the end of March; the second, more expansive leg picks up in July and sees them circling around the entire US through to August.
They’ve also released an absolutely massive four-disc 20th Anniversary Edition of the album. It features remastered versions of all the original tracks, a collection of b-sides and remixes on the second and third discs, and finally a live recording from Norfolk, VA in 2006 – a set featuring many tracks from The Sunlandic Twins but also performances of then-unreleased tracks such as ‘She’s a Rejecter’ from 2007’s Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
While Sunlandic Twins tracks, especially highlights such as ‘Wraith Pinned to the Mist (and Other Games)’ have featured across ofM sets for years, this may very well be the first time many listeners will be able to experience the album in its entirety outside of headphones – a chance not to be missed for a record that stands as a modern classic of psychedelic, funky pop rock. As ever, of Montreal performances promise to be enlivened with dancing, pageantry, props, and audience participation – they’re a band to catch for your first, tenth, or hundredth time as soon as you can.
