No, we’re not talking about hibernation time for the big furry animals. We’re talking about New England’s premier Americana music festival. Most folks think of leaf peeping in the northwest Connecticut hills in October but those who know their music think of Black Bear Americana Music Festival. It’s truly an event for the whole family with games for kids of all ages, hula hoops, great food and even greater music! This year’s Black Bear is being held on October 11-13 at the Fairgrounds of Goshen, Connecticut.
Last year, Friday and Sunday were comfortable Autumn days. However, Saturday Mother Nature threw a curve ball at Black Bear and dumped a good amount of rain for the first time in the festival’s history. The wet weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the festival goers. Festival organizers proved they had the know how and ability to overcome the monsoon-like weather unlike this Music Madness Magazine photographer. With quick thinking, the festival production folks under the guidance of the organizers moved acts indoors and the music went on as planned!
You may ask, what sort of music does this festival have? The festival will have over 50 acts and will showcase both Grammy Award winners and up and coming local musicians. Whether or not you are familiar with an artist, you will walk away knowing that you saw a great show. Featuring music from blues, to rockabilly, to folk, to rock, this festival has something that will appeal to everyone.
This year’s lineup features returning blues rockers, Victor Wainwright & The Train closing the show Friday night. Also returning Saturday is local favorites Johnny Longo and the Koolhead Blues Band who always deliver a blistering set! Closing Saturday night is festival newcomers Le Vent du Nord. They’ll be bringing Black Bear traditional Celtic music with a modern twist. The eclectic Slambovian Circus Of Dreams will be delighting the crowd both Saturday and Sunday. Also returning on Sunday is the crowd favorite Shanna in a Dress. Her delightful brand of quirky folk pop is always a joy to behold! Closing out the festival Sunday evening will be the barefooted folk rocker, Adam Ezra.
Not only does the festival have dual stages side by side that keep the music flowing, they have a gazebo stage that greets folks with great music as they enter the festival. There is also a workshop stage that features artists discussing things from guitar tuning, to busking, to songwriting and so on. It’s a great way to learn some of the ins and outs of delivering music to the public.
Not only does the festival have great music, it has great food and drink choices. For those who like to camp, there are several options of camping to choose from. See the website for availabilities. There is a lot of camaraderie amongst campers with folks sitting around camp fires, joining together in song after the festival’s stages have gone dark. The overall feel of the festival is one to experience. As stated before, it’s a family atmosphere that has very welcoming vibes. Bring a blanket or chair, wander off to investigate what the festival has to offer and fear not, you gear will be right where you left it!
If you haven’t experienced Black Bear Americana Music Festival, what are you waiting for? Not saying you won’t be seeing the Autumn colors surrounding you at the festival, but if you can, take the time to do the afore mentioned leaf peeping before of after the festival (or both!). Take in the beauty that New England offers and you’ll be back year after year to partake in Black Bear Music Festival!
