Anders Osborne paid a visit to the SWFL Event Center as he opened the show for Rickie Lee Jones. For forty-five minutes I found myself captivated and intrigued. Sometimes it’s hard to cover an individual as they’re singing and playing. You can only shoot from so many angles without being repetitive however Anders was different.
His playing style was very interesting and entertaining as well as the lyrics. He was one with his songs and that really made it special. From the reaction of the crowd it’s pretty safe to say that everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.
From the early beginnings in 1989 Anders has written most of his own material. These days he find himself more disciplined and that showed in 2016 as he released “Spacedust & Ocean Views” as well as the harder hitting “Flower Box“. In a recent interview he had said he had two records in the can and currently working on a third. We’ll have to keep our eyes open to see when those are released!
In addition to his own music, Anders has also co‐written songs that were on Keb Mo’s Grammy winning release “Slow Down” in 1999 that featured two of his songs. Tim McGraw hit a #1 with his song “Watch The Wind Blow By” which stayed there for two weeks and sold over three million albums. He also produced and played on high charting albums by Tab Benoit, Johnny Sansone and Mike Zito. His compositions have been covered by Brad Paisley, Tab Benoit, Jonny Lang, Edwin McCain, Sam Bush, Trombone Shorty and Aaron Neville, and Kim Carnes.
It’s no secret that Osborne suffered from drugs and alcohol that nearly destroyed his family as well as his career. During his recovery he had to go back to the bars, music halls and festivals in order to maintain his finances. That’s no easy job, being tempted everywhere you turned. “Send Me a Friend” is not only the title to one of his songs. It is also an idea he had come up with during his recovery after friends of his came to a show just to support him by being there.
If you’re a musician out on the road or know someone who is that may need help you can send them to www.sendmeafriend.org.
